Sanitary Pads Project
The objective of the sanitary towels/pad project is to enable girls to be in school at all times of the month. The cost of sanitary towels is beyond the reach of most young women and girls, who in rural Kenya, are unemployed and live in poverty. In addition, there are physiological and symptomatic challenges that girls go through during their menstrual cycle, which also hinder their full access to education as well as stop them from fully enjoying activities available within the school.
Attendance records from all participating schools has shown improved retention of girls in school. All girls supplied with sanitary towels and their guardians and teachers in charge of the girls health clubs, were trained by a registered nurse in all aspects of hygiene. The sanitary towels project has contributed to girl’s education which is the most important investment for women in poor and developing countries. Education contributes towards better health for their families, increasing their potential to succeed in life. The first provision of sanitary towels to needy girls was undertaken with 233 cartons of 'always ultra wings' supplied to 1,345 girls in 11 Primary and 6 Secondary schools. We are now in 47 schools and supply the sanitary needs of more than 3,000 girls. |
